HSHI Opens Staff-free Cafe to Support Communities

HSHI’s Good Cafe donates its proceeds to African children

On April 7, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), the world’s fourth largest shipbuilder, opened an in-house cafe whose coffee sales will be used to fund social or charitable projects.
“Good Cafe” is an unmanned self-serve coffee shop located on the first floor of the HSHI main office.
Previously a Staff Lounge, the 80 m2 space was transformed into a small coffee shop at a modest cost of 3.8 million Korean won funded by HSHI employees.
They also financed or donated its furnishings.
As its first project, Good Cafe used its proceeds to purchase 150 bed nets to be sent to Tanzanian children who are prone to malaria infection, on April 30.
Bed net, which costs 5,000 Korean won apiece, is a simple, life-saving solution that can save many lives in Tanzania by avoiding out malaria-carrying mosquitos.
In Good Cafe, HSHI employees can help themselves with a cup of coffee from an automatic coffee brewer after putting in at least 1,000 Korean won into the honesty box. The cash placed therein is entirely used for philanthropic activities.
In its subsequent project, the cafe plans to provide a broad range of medical supplies and vehicles to underprivileged children in Africa. It also seeks to send a relief to the victims of Nepal Earthquake in the near future.
An HSHI member said, “it is meaningful that just one cup of coffee can help save the life of a child.”
