HYUNDAI SAMHO HEAVY INDUSTRIES (HSHI) is prominent in the eco-friendly shipbuilding market ahead of the regulations of the International Maritime Organization's sulfur oxides emissions, which will enter into force in 2020.

HSHI recently announced that it has successfully constructed Very Large Crude oil Carrier (VLCC) equipped with sulfur oxides (SOx) scrubber for the first time in the world and held signing and naming ceremony on March 13.

The vessel is the first of two ships ordered by Greek Almi in August 2016. It is a VLCC capable of carrying 310,000 tons of crude oil. It has 336 meters in length, 60 meters in width and 30 meters in height.

The ship's rudder and propeller have been equipped with various facilities to enhance fuel efficiency and the vessel was built to the highest specifications with equipment to reduce hazardous emissions such as sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides (NOx) regulated by the International Maritime Organization.
In particular, the ship is attracting industry attention because it is equipped with a gas scrubber that can reduce sulfur oxides emissions for the first time in the world. The gas scrubber installed on the vessel is 11 meters high and 8.3 meters wide, and cleans the exhaust gas with seawater to remove sulfur oxides. By using this equipment, sulfur oxides in the exhaust gas emitted by the ship can be reduced to less than 0.5% from the existing 3.5%.

Furthermore, HSHI has been strengthening its competitiveness by accumulating business achievements in building eco-friendly ships.
In February 2017, the world's first LNG fueled tanker was received from Sovcomflot in Russia, and construction work is underway. In August of the same year, a ship equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system which is drastically capable of reducing nitrogen oxides was the first in the world delivered to shipowner Ditas, Turkey.

An official from HSHI said, "As the international maritime organization is strengthening environmental regulations on ship exhaust, we are confident that our competitive edge in eco-friendly shipbuilding will brighten the future of the company."
