Two Ships Named Significant Ships of the Year

- A 9,000 TEU containership and an 8,000 CEU car carrier named Significant Ships of the Year
- A total of 18 HSHI ships have been featured in Significant Ships since 2004

A 9,000 TEU containership and an 8,000 CEU car carrier constructed by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) were included in the list of “Significant Ships of the Year,” an annual publication of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

Significant Ships, one of the world’s most prestigious publications providing a reference source to some of the very best in today’s ship design and construction, featured HSHI’s containership and car carrier, “UASC Tabuk” and “Thermopylae,” in its latest edition which delves into approximately 50 of the most innovative and significant commercial designs delivered last year by shipyards worldwide.

UASC Tabuk, which measures 299 m long, 48 m wide and 25 m deep, is capable of hauling 9,000 20-foot containers per trip. It is owned by Greece-based shipping company Embiricos. Thermopylae, which measures 200 m long, 37 m wide and 38 m deep, can carry 8,000 vehicles, and is owned by Norway’s Wilh. Wilhelmsen Holding.

The vessels, equipped with state-of-the-art engines, emission controls and energy-efficient rudders, are classified as eco-ships that are in full compliance with the Energy Efficient Design Index requirements, which was introduced to minimize the emission of harmful gases.

HSHI now has 18 ships, including the aforementioned duo, featured in Significant Ships of the Year. The 18-ship fleet consists of 8 containerships, 7 crude oil carriers, 2 car carriers and 1 bulk carrier.

A HSHI source said, “Our medium-sized containerships and car carriers were named World Class Products by the Korean government last year on the back of their largest global market share, and this coupled with the inclusion of two ships in Significant Ships this time reaffirms our competitive edge in the maritime space. This was made possible by our unwavering dedication to innovative technologies to cater to even the most demanding requirements of our shipowners.”
