Three Ships Built By HSHI Selected as Significant Ships of 2015
Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) announced today that an 18,800 TEU containership, a 15,000 TEU containership and a 17,400 cbm LNG carrier it delivered have been selected as Significant Ships of 2015 by Naval Architect.
The naval engineering magazine announced that it selected the three ships HSHI built in recognition of the-state-of-the-art technologies adapted to enhance ships’ energy efficiency, environment friendliness and safety.
The 18,800 TEU containership, Barzan, and the 15,000 TEU containership, Al Murabba, both delivered to UASC, are fitted with waste heat recovery system, power management system and hull stress monitoring system. Especially, Barzan is built with an LNG-ready feature that enables it run on both heavy fuel oil and LNG.
The 17,400 cbm membrane-type LNG carrier, named Achilles, measures 290 m in length, 46.4 m in width and 26.4 m in depth. The twin-skeg LNG carrier is equipped with two Hi-FIN, a fuel saving device attached at the hub of a propeller. Hi-FIN generates countering swirls that offset the swirls generated by the propeller, and thus improves propulsion efficiency. Moreover, the LNG carrier is built with Hi-Rudder, a full spade rudder designed to generate an additional thrust and reduce low pressure peak, hence maximizing propulsive efficiency while minimizing cavitation erosion. Its containment tanks made of improved insulation helps to lower boil off rate from 0.1% to 0.085%. With the help of all of these technologies, the LNG carrier realizes 5% fuel efficiency improvement in comparison with the other same type LNG carriers.
The designation of three ships this year brings the total number of the title HSHI has won since its foundation to 21 including 10 containerships, 7 tankers, 2 PCTCs, an LNG carrier and a bulker.
An official of HSHI said, “Despite unfavorable market conditions recently, the global shipbuilding industry has seen an upward trend in demand for high efficient and environment friendly ships. Bearing in mind the trend, as we have always been, we will continue to remain dedicated to meeting customers’ needs with relentless technological innovation.”
