Gagarin Prospect delivered from HSHI chosen as Nor-Shipping 2019 Next Generation Award winner
Gagarin Prospect, Aframax tanker of Sovcomflot in Russia, delivered from Hyundai Samho, has been crowned as the winner of the Nor-Shipping 2019 Next Generation Ship Award.
The award ceremony was held at the "Norshipping 2019", one of the leading international shipping events in Oslo, Norway, between April 4 and 7, and the award was presented by Norwegian Minister of Trade Torbjørn Røe Isaksen.
The award was created to select and celebrate the most innovative vessels in terms of design and technology in time for the opening of the international shipping events, Norshiping 2019, and judges went through a fierce debate process on the candidate ships to select the best vessel.
Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries delivered the next-generation awarded ship named Gagarin Prospect in July 2018. This vessel is equipped with the world's first dual fuel engine system that can operate LNG and HFO as fuel. Two 856 cbm LNG gas tanks have been installed on the left and right sides of the ship's upper deck to enable operation by gas, and systems that can supply fuel to engines and boilers through the gas supply system are also installed. When it is not operating by LNG, it is also equipped with equipment that can comply with the environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The 250 meter long, 44 meter wide and 21 meter depth scale has been applied with an ice class design for operation in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries made a contract for six Aframax Tankers with Sovcomflot in Russia in 0000 and delivered all vessels to the Buyer by April this year.
"The construction of the vessel is a historic event that has provided a turning point for the expansion of infrastructure such as LNG-powered ships and LNG-bunking," said an official at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. "I think it has been tested internationally for innovative attempts, technologies and design capabilities to create new markets."
Meanwhile, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries is leading the eco-friendly shipbuilder by securing the world's best construction performance and newbuilding orders for LNG fueled vessels.
At present, there are six 14,700 TEU container ships and two 180,000MT bulk carriers with the backlog of orders for LNG-fueled vessels, all of which are scheduled to be delivered by 2022.
